ebird list service - what is this??
eBird.org is a great tool for bird watchers across the world. We use it for keeping track of what we see, when we see it, and so on. At the same time, we in a small way work as citizen scientists, possibly contributing to a greater god by making our observations available to the world.
A tool as eBird can grow infinitely. There is always yet some more functionality that can be implemented, and is asked for. This is a dilemma. If more and more functionality is added, the end result may be a monster; difficult to use and difficult to maintain. The eBird team has chosen (in my opinion) a wise rather minimalistic approach.
Due to this approach there is functionality "missing" in eBird. Instead, some of this is offered here. The approach is to share what I miss in eBird myself. It might be useful for others as well.
Compare eBird lists
There are occasions when I want to compare lists beyond what eBird offers out of the box.
- What species are seen in "place x" which I have not seen (at all/in my country)?
- What have I and my friend xyz seen together? (joining arbitrary lists)
Go to eBird and down-load the lists you would like to compare. You can now compare both csv-files and histogram data (*.txt), example Ghana list.Kindly note, the names are compared. So, if you compare your list with a friend's make certain you have a common language and name format. English only in one list, and English + Scientific names in the other, will not work.
